Alabama

Veterans must have been permanent AL resident for one year immediately prior to entry into service. The dependent of service-connected, totally-disabled veteran may qualify if veteran has been a bona-fide AL resident for five years immediately prior to date of application or date of death if veteran is deceased.

Eligibility: Alabama GI Dependents Scholarship Program for a child whose parent

  1. Was killed or died in the line of duty
  2. Is listed as Missing In Action
  3. Died from a service-connected disability incurred during military service
  4. Is living and rated 20% to 100% service connected disabled
  5. Is deceased but had a 20% to 100% service connected disability at the time of death
  6. Is or was a Prisoner of War

Benefits: Free tuition, books, and instructional fees at state institutions of higher learning or prescribed courses in trade school (36 months maximum). Must apply prior to age 26 which may be extended to age 30 in certain cases. Training to be completed within 8 years. Training period may be extended due to training delays caused by military service during training period or accident, injury, or illness during training period which delays training.

Application: Alabama State Department of Veterans Affairs, PO Box 1509, Montgomery AL 36102-1509 or any County Veterans Service Officer of that Department whose office is located in the County Courthouse or building nearby.

 

Eligibility: Husband, wife, or widow of veteran who:

  1. Who was killed or died in the line of duty
  2. Who died as a result of disability(s) incurred from active service
  3. Who is 100% totally and permanently disabled from disabilities incurred during active duty
  4. Who is listed as MIA during Vietnam
  5. Is or was a Prisoner of War

Benefits: Free tuition, books, and instructional fees at state institutions of higher learning or prescribed courses in trade school (36 months maximum). Widow(er) not entitled to benefits upon remarriage. No age limit established for initiation of training.

Application: Alabama State Department of Veterans Affairs, PO Box 1509, Montgomery AL 36102-1509 or any County Veterans Service Officer of that Department whose office is located in the County Courthouse or building nearby.

 

Eligibility: Husband, wife, or widow of veteran with service as outlined above, who has 20% to 90% service connected disability(s) or if such veteran at time of death had 20% to 90% service connected disability(s).

Benefits: Free tuition, books, and instructional fees at state institutions of higher learning or prescribed courses in trade school for a maximum of 18 months maximum. Widow(er) not entitled to benefits upon remarriage. No age limit established for initiation of training.

Application: Alabama State Department of Veterans Affairs, PO Box 1509, Montgomery AL 36102-1509 or any County Veterans Service Officer of that Department whose office is located in the County Courthouse or building nearby.

 

Eligibility: Vietnam Era Veteran with at least 24 months of honorable service between 8/5/64 and 5/7/75, or discharged by reason of service connected disability with less than 24 months service.

Program Benefits: Correspondence or extension course from state-supported institution. Must apply within four years from discharge date. Not eligible, if educational benefits are being received under any federal law or if maximum federal benefits have been used.

Florida

Education for Children of Deceased or Disabled Florida Veterans:

The State of Florida provides Scholarships for dependent children of a veteran or service person who died from a disease or disability resulting from service during a period of war; or has a 100% service-connected disability as determined by the VA or DOD; became 100% disabled or died in the Iranian Rescue Mission (Operation Eagle Claw) or the Lebanon and Grenada military arenas or in the crash of a military transport airplane in Gander, Newfoundland on December 12, 1985, while returning from Mideast peace-keeping duties in the Sinai Desert, or Iraqi Missile attack on the USS Starke on May 17, 1987, Operation Just Cause, Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm; was classified as POW or MIA during the Korean Conflict or Vietnam Era and has not returned alive or remains have not been recovered. Either of the parents of such children must have been bonafide residents of the state at the time such parent entered service and for 5 years preceding the application. Tuition Deferment:

Available to any veteran or other eligible student covered under Title 38, U.S.C. Allows one tuition deferment each academic year and an additional deferment when a delay in benefits occurs. FS 239.117

Reduced Tuition For National Guard:

Active Florida Guard members in good standing are exempt from payment of one-half of tuition and fees. Georgia

ELIGIBILITY:

Georgia Military Scholarship: GA residents with 3.0 high school GPA, 1010 combined SAT and minimum of 480 verbal and 440 math, who qualify for admission to North Georgia College and State University and entry into the Army National Guard and eligible to be commissioned into the GA National Guard. Must be nominated by a GA Legislator.

 

BENEFITS:

Full four year scholarship. Recipients agree to be a member of the Cadet Corps at Northern Georgia College and State University to serve at least four years in the Georgia Army National Guard as a commissioned officer after graduation.

Mississippi

ELIGIBILITY:

Dependent children, up to age 23, of veteran parents who were officially reported as POW/MIA in Southeast Asia or having been prisoners of foreign government as a result of military action against the U.S. Naval Vessel Pueblo and whose parents met the residence requirements as established by the state of MS.

 

BENEFITS:

Free tuition and room at any state supported college or university for a period not to exceed eight semesters.

Tennessee

ELIGIBILITY:

Children of Armed Forces Members killed or who died as a result of injuries sustained in WWII, Korea, Vietnam or the Persian Gulf. Also, children of POW or MIA men are eligible. TN resident and age limit 21. Applicable state statute; TCA sections 49-3245, 3246 and 7-102.

 

BENEFITS:

Free tuition and/or maintenance fees, and/or student activities fees, and/or registration fees required at any college or university in TN, owned, operated and maintained by the state.

 

APPLICATION:

Financial aid office, records office or bursar’s office at the school selected by the student.
